If the nice weather has you itching to put your home on the market or buy a new place, you're not alone.

Birds chirping and kids playing set the scene for spring when the sun shines on the housing market.

"The flowers are coming up early. The market's coming up early," said RE/MAX Real Estate Concepts Broker Lance Hanson.

Springtime in the world of real estate starts January 10th. People have put the holidays behind them and are looking forward to schools for the kids or tax returns.

Ellen Reeder's family is ready for a bigger place so they put their home on the market at the beginning of the year.

"While we're going out and looking at open houses we see lots of other young couples," she said. "So it's been really encouraging for us."

Hanson said the Des Moines market has bottomed out and is seeing a major rebound from past years.

"Based on sales in the last years, we're up about 20% so far this year. More pendings, more closings."

That means there are fewer houses out there. If you're considering making a move, now could be your chance.

"It's a great time to buy. It's a great time to sell," Hanson said.

Another good sign is that Des Moines and West Des Moines were ranked fourth by Inman News as a real estate market to watch. Waterloo and Cedar Falls ranked ninth.
